small moments of bliss are everywhere to be found....

Good morning/afternoon/evening my wonderful HeArtful friends!!

I’m soooo happy you’ve found your way here to this HeArtspace and soooo excited to be penning my first article on Happiness. Its been an amazing whirlwind 2 days in my world during which time I have changed my mind a dozen times about what I should write for this first post!!

Happiness!! What a huge topic! We all want it but what is IT really?

There are many wiser than I who have pondered this question over the ages so I thought that looking at some of these thoughts and how they apply to our lives was a great place to start!

A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?~Albert Einstein

Appreciate the simple things…one thing I know for sure is that happiness is cumulative…it begins with an appreciation for small things and grows from there. It begins with the simple awareness of WHAT makes YOU happy and when you begin to spend time doing those things which bring you joy you open the doorway little by little to larger glimpses of Happiness.

Alan Cohen calls this building your bliss muscle 🙂

Years ago, long before I became an artist,

long before I had the courage to sing in front of others,

long before we had built our dream house by the sea,

in fact at a time when I had no real idea of what exactly it was that would fulfill me,

with our first baby on the way,

2 pieces of borrowed furniture,

a rented cottage and no savings

I decided to write a list of things I enjoyed……it was basic and even felt a little forced.

On it I wrote;

Working with children

Being creative

Within a week I noticed an article in the local newspaper about a woman who ran creativity classes in order to enhance self esteem in kids…..inside me something stirred, a seed was planted…that’s the kind of person I wanted to be… a new doorway of possibility was opened, ever so slightly.

18 years later, a miraculous journey has unfolded, one which I will share with you over the coming months, and if I were to write that list again I don’t know that I would be able to stop….so many things bring me joy  that some days it seems as if happiness IS indeed my natural state, punctuated here and there by small moments of discomfort rather than the other way around as it once was.

my list today would go something like…

a beautiful sunset

a butterfly flying nearby in the garden

an hour exploring a new section in the library

a giggle with my girls

a walk on the beach with dolphins

leaving a message of love in the sand for the next passerby

giving and receiving hugs and more hugs

making music with my love

laughter with colleagues at work

fresh juice using citrus fresh picked from the garden

losing time in my studio

Inspiring others to find their creative bliss

sitting in a red chair with a cup of tea late in the afternoon staring out at the garden

Painting Happy!

and on and on….

What is on your list?

What brings you a moment of joy, a sense of peace, a feeling of contentment

Ever since happiness heard your name, it has been running through the streets trying to find you.~Hafiz

Hafiz knew that happiness was not something to be chased after or strived for…instead it is our natural state…we need only open our hearts to let it in ♥

I’d love to know whats on your list and to encourage you to spend some time today, this week, this month, living in your places of happiness and dwelling less on what causes you sadness, anger or despair. Next time we’ll talk about the fact that happiness is also contagious and in fact grows and compounds when shared…

Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.~Eleanor Roosevelt

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.- Buddha

The greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being.- Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama

Leaving you with some hugs and shared happiness today my lovelies…I dare you not to feel happy when you watch this!
